My Music Culture
Hello there! My name is Quiana Suber. I grew up in a small, country town called Mountville (about 10 minutes from the city of Clinton, South Carolina). Music has been apart of my life since I was old enough to be apart of my church youth choir. I attend an African Methodist Episcopal Church located in Newberry, SC. We did a lot of fast tempo songs that were very energic. The more slower tempos sounded better for the adults 😂. The fundamentals of music I learned there helped shape my listening ear to music in general.
Music to me means something that I can relate to. Although I am open to hearing new music of different cultures, the little things attract me. I love for the music to take me on a roller coaster of thought and enhance my view of the culture. I'd like to share with you bits of my music culture and see if you can join my wave of rhythm.
- An example of music that is important to me. For as long as I have been alive, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Gospel have been my main three sources of music. It is most prominent in African American households. These pieces of music are important to me because they are apart of my history. I can remember back in elementary school when I would perform Michael Jackson on stage for talent shows. To be able to have music that expresses who you are is key to finding some self identity. My mother would blast Mary J. Blige CDs in her car everyday and for a moment I felt like a bad mother SHUT YO MOUTH. I say that to push the fact that music can make you identify as how you see yourself.
- An example of music that has helped me through the pandemic. The pandemic affected a lot of things for my normal day to day. I was a student athlete in high school and usually did not see my home upon hours on end because I would be busy from 9am-5pm. Once the pandemic hit back in March, I spent a lot of time at home by myself. As one does with leisure time, I watched a lifetime worth of movies and tv shows everyday. Some examples would be Boeheim Rhapsody, Dreamgirls, Walk the Line, etc. These movies have songs that I come to grow fond of. Queen opened up my quirky side which I really like actually. My friends I made here at Converse like to listen to mashups which I find very cool as well and will insert below.
- An example of music I don't actually like. I like most music in all honesty. I don't dislike any music because I am open to listen to everything. My girlfriend's sister listens to a lot of heavy metal music. It is kind of hard to get into because of the constant disjunct and changing dynamics. It also has heavily implied sexual hints throughout the music. Heavy metal is definitely for certain age groups. I appreciate the overall creativity the music has to offer. It's different which attracts me. I am sorry in advance if this offends my readers in some way!
I like most of Michael Jackson´s songs and I think this one is one of the better ones. He has a nice voice and the beat is always good. Queens is also great and I discovered their songs for a few years ago and listened to them a lot in a period. The last song is not my favorite genre either, I find it hard to enjoy
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the music you have selected as your favourites or quarantine music! I am noticing that many individuals in this class have stated that heavy metal (or at least some form of metal) is their least favourite and hardest for them to relate to. I agree with the points that you touched on with metal. Though I do like some metal, at certain times, I agree with your statements. I have never been a fan a heavily sexually laced music, so I especially don't like metal surrounding that.
ReplyDeleteI like the variety of music you have picked out for your blog post. I agree with you when you say that music is the key to finding self identity. Music has helped me find certain parts of myself as a person.
